Guest Fold.
There are still a few minor problems regarding the “ gating “ of the backs but hopefully these will be sorted out very soon.
Work has started on the site so that the start of the growing season will not be missed, a line of trees will be planted on the side of Bee Fold Lane, these will act as a screen for the proposed polytunnels.
There have been other setbacks, because, the land at Guest Fold was earmarked for developments in 1995 and has been on the market since then, although there has not been a single offer made for the land, it would seem that the land has also been designated as a conservation area and apparently has a covenant on the land to retain it as a public park, all these have to be investigated and verified.
Food Bank.
The response from Howe Bridge has been tremendous, thankyou to everyone who has donated, the opening of the actual food bank is scheduled for Wednesday March 6th in St John`s Hall, Atherton, donations can still be made by contacting Terry Daly on 01942 603175, these can be collected.
New Footpath.
The barriers are now in place and the footpath is virtually finished although there is still the planting of bulbs etc to be done alongside the path, hopefully this will be done soon.
St Michaels School.
Permission has been given to Gavin & Natalie Haynes to develop the bottom end of the playground to create areas to plant trees, Vegetables, plants etc also to have areas with different surfaces for the children to play on, this is a very ambitious project and they will need a lot of help, The Bridgers have committed to help and there is some very welcome support from a number of parents.
St Michaels Church
MARCH 10th is Mothering Sunday and an ALL age service is being held starting at 9-30am.
MARCH 31st is Easter Sunday and a Family Eucharist Service is being held starting at 9-30am
Mining Artefact.
There is a possibility that we may qualify for funding from Wigan MBC to buy a mining sculpture for Colliers Corner, this would be in the form of a pithead wheel with a coal truck on rails at the front of the wheel, the approximate size of the wheel would be 2.75 metres X 2.2 metres
The truck would be about 1.5 metres X 1.2 metres X 1.2 metres
The rails approximately 2.00 metres long.
A local blacksmith has been approached and prices agreed subject to successful bid.
Wigan & Leigh Homes.
A very positive and productive meeting was held between the Bridgers and W & L Homes recently to discuss how we could support each other, many things were agreed, including, clean-ups, skip day, help with equipment we might need etc, the Bridgers would support W & L Homes in their various projects within the village estate, the question of Insurance was raised , in the past the Bridgers have been covered by W & L Homes “ umbrella “ insurance but unfortunately they could no longer fund this for us so, we asked if we could remain with the same cover and fund it ourselves, Liz Johnson from W & L Homes offered to enquire if this was possible and promised to get back to us ASAP.

Valentines Road / Gretna Road
There is a rumour going around this area that there will be 136 houses built on land adjoining and behind these roads, Councillor Susan Loudon informed the meeting that the land is owned by Wigan MBC and that is NOT up for sale, also, there has been NO planning applications made. These rumours are just scaremongering and should be ignored.
Proud and Loud
This is an initiative to with the intention of, MAKING THE VOICE OF OLDER PEOPLE COUNT.
It is being organised by AGE UK who believe that the time has come for the Knowledge & Experience of older people to be recognised and valued by the country`s decision makers.
AGEING WELL is important to ALL generations because issues affects us all, in consultations older people have told AGE UK that they want to,
Stay independent and in control of their own lives.
Be treated with dignity and respect.
Stay physically and mentally well
Be valued for the contributions they make to their local communities.
Have enough money to live on.
Older people are NOT listened to and are NOT consulted on decisions that affect them.
What is important to people who are getting older is a very emotive subject and we feel that the voice of the elderly SHOULD be heard so we have invited SIAN JAY from the company Social Re-Focus to attend our next meeting. Sian runs Social Re-focus which is a group that specialises in working in the community with the elderly for the elderly.
COME TO OUR NEXT MEETING AND HAVE YOUR SAY ON WHAT SHOULD BE DONE FOR THE OLDER PERSON !!
Wigan 4 Good
This is a Wigan & Leigh CVS run initiative that has been launched to encourage small community groups, Charities, Social Enterprises and commercial businesses to support local good causes and each other through the giving of time, skills and sharing of resources.
The organiser of Wigan 4 Good will be attending one of our committee meetings in the future to discuss how this affects the Bridgers and how we can be involved.
Plant Sales.
We are hoping to hold four plant sales this year, two at the Scout headquarters, one on Colliers Corner and one at Prospect House , Bolton Road, Atherton, Prospect House is now the training headquarters and office and salesroom for, TRAIN LOCKSMITHS, ATHERTON.
Next Meeting,
Is being held on Thursday March 7th in the Scout Headquarters, Leigh Road, Howe Bridge starting at 8-00pm.
This is an open meeting, come and have your say on what you want for Howe Bridge at present and in the future.
