BRIDGER 145 APRIL 2013

BRIDGER  145  APRIL 2013

The chairman opened the meeting by welcoming everyone and giving a special welcome to Barbara Lane from  the Hindley Green Residents Association and also to Sian Jay from the “ Proud and Loud “ section of Age UK.

HGRA.

Barbara Lane gave an open invitation to the meeting for anyone who would like to attend a meeting of the HGRA, the meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month at 7-00pm in the Bethel Community Centre, Atherton Road, Hindley Green.

Proud and Loud.

Sian Jay talked about this Age UK project which is subtitled “ Aging Well “ after a brief presentation on the aims of the project Sian asked the people present a series of questions aimed at the over 50s.

The questions included,

What issues are important to us.

What makes us cross.

What are you most proud of.

What makes a good citizen.

What will be different for our children when they grow up.

Who do you want to listen to you.

What worries you at present.

Who can change things.

What do you enjoy most in life.

The answers we heard in response to all these questions were very thought provoking and the discussion was excellent.  Sian took notes of everything that was said and when she has completed her series of meetings with the various groups in our area she will then correlate all the responses and hopefully arrive at some conclusions, Sian has promised to send us details of the results of all her meetings.

There is also an online survey at,

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/M3XKMO9

Community First.

The Community First Committee of Atherleigh are obliged to make a Community Plan to enable the committee to target the correct areas that require funding.

One of the ways to do this is to ask the residents of Atherleigh, of which Howe Bridge is a part, what they would like to see happen in our area, to do this we have compiled a very simple survey consisting of just three questions, these are,

What do you like about where you live  ?

What do you NOT like about where you live ?

What three things would you like us to change to make you happier about where you live ?

These are important questions because they can tell us exactly what people think about our area and also what can be done to improve our area.

Will you please take five minutes to think about this survey and then send your answers to either,

New Footpath.

The footpath that runs between Leigh Road and the Atherleigh by-pass has now opened and has proved to be an excellent short cut and pleasant to walk.

St Michaels School.

Funding from the Lottery Fund has been applied for to develop part of the playground to make garden and vegetable plots for the children to work on and learn from, about eight metres of the playground will be dug up at the end near the bungalows that border the school.

Gardeners Bowling Club

The major renovation at the Gardeners bowling green has  now

Been virtually completed, a concrete footpath has been created around the green and is suitable for wheelchair and buggy use. New tables and seating has been either bought or made and will be in position for the first match.

The bowling green has been prepared for the new season and is now open for 2013. The first home match of the new season is on Tuesday April 2nd, 6-30pm start.

Mining Artefact.

Funding has been applied for by Atherton Environment Projects to buy a replica pithead wheel and coal truck for Colliers Corner, these would be made by a local blacksmith, if the application is successful and we get the artefacts they  would be sited near to the existing Colliers Corner sign.

This would be a reminder of the mining heritage of the village and would also be an appropriate centre piece for Colliers Corner.

North West in Bloom.

Our application to be entered into the2013  NW IN Bloom competition has been submitted, the category we are entering this year is for the Urban Community award. The criteria is exactly the same as for the Large Village award but the judges are a bit more critical.

For entries that attain gold standard in the Urban Community award they sometimes get an invitation to enter the National In Bloom Awards competition, an excellent incentive for everyone in the village.

Litter.

Several areas in the village have been highlighted as “ hotspots “ for litter, they are around the sports centre, on the small mound with the trees between Hansom Drive and the apartment block,  between Johnson Street and Lovers Lane and Leigh Road near the promenade.

PLEASE use the litter bins that are around the village or take your litter home DON`T leave it lying around.

Meeting.

The day / date of the next meeting is  Thursday April 4th and it is being held in the Scout Headquarters, leigh Road, Atherton.
